Ah, the rollercoaster of running a biz with a team! First, it’s all honeymoon vibes. Then, bam! Love-hate drama. I’m compiling a long list of reasons, and these are my first thoughts.

Just Trust Your Team — Yeah, Right

Hired a secretary once. She’s claiming, “I’m the queen of accuracy in my old office.” Fast forward, and I’m like, “What loony bin was she in before?” It’s bonkers how many newbies don’t get the meaning of words like ‘working’ or ‘reliability.’ Plan-making? Alien concept. You can’t even trust them with the exact job you’re paying for! Motivated as a sloth on vacation and uncommitted to improve their game.

You’ve Gotta Be An Expert From Day One

How can you learn to lead on-the-job if these people are your raw material? ‘Boss 101’ is not a school subject. There’s no real place to safely train your leadership muscles. No hotline to call.

Much ‘leadership advice’ is flimsy as foil and real role models are hard to find.

Working Hard To Solve Our Own Problems

Thus, we goof up. Big time. Hiring duds instead of studs. Trusting the iffy ones. Grumbling about late work, yet giving them another chance. And another. And that brings us here, sweating buckets to fix their messes, surprisingly clueless that it’s our own lack of leadership skills that’s actually doing us in.

We Keep Muddling Through

No wonder we start to doubt ourselves. Will there ever be light at the end of the tunnel? Meanwhile, we hide our struggles, because everybody tells us that ‘Leading A Team is a Breeze.’ And so, onward we trudge, on this road to nowhere.
